IV. The fourth seal (the pale horse, Rev. 6:7, 8)

The last of the seven horsemen is the pale horse and with this horse we get a glimpse of the identity of the rider.  “And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.” Here the antichrist is seen in his true shade and known by his true person and seen traveling with his true consequent. What is amazing is this; after all that is said and done in the seven seals men of this world will cling to this man and worship him and receive his mark. It reminds me of a question once posed to Stalin by a certain woman who asked how he expected to control the people of whom he so severely mistreated, persecuted, and starved. Stalin took a small chicken and plucked away all of its feathers causing great pain to the living bird. Stalin asked the lady to observe the phenomenon that the bird which was made to suffer so much at the hand of the persecutor would now cling to him as its protector. Stalin explained to the woman that the masses were the same way; if you take everything from them and made them suffer they would yet cling to you as their master. Here the antichrist in this procession with the promise of peace has brought the people of this world to war and starvation. He is now seen as riding a pale horse. The pale pigment is either meant to describe the nauseous light green color of sickness or it is the bloodless color of death. Each I believe is fitting of the true color of antichrist but the latter seems to be most fitting. Jesus is the way and truth and life. Jesus is the resurrection and life. This man comes in the paleness of death. In fact, He is even given the name Death. Christ is life and the antichrist is the personification of death. Satan who was defeated by Christ was said to have the power of death. This satanically controlled man then is death personified. One of the designers of atomic bomb rightly said, “I am become death, the destroyer of the worlds.” This man is the personification of that very idea. Death is the wage of sin and that is this man personified. Ultimately, death is the defeated enemy described by Paul in the 15th chapter of the I Corinthians. All that this man is is already defeated by Christ. And this man is even seen with his full consequence. Hell followed hard after him. We note that Hell did not just follow after Him it followed with Him. It was in full alliance with Him. The idolatrous Jewish nation once boasted that they had an alliance with Death and an agreement with Hell. God warned them that it would not stand. Here the world as a whole finds that they have made such an agreement. At the end of this book we will see death and hell cast into the lake of fire together but for now they are seen together riding in a short triumph.

The final phase of the revelation of antichrist, the wicked one being revealed, is completed with this final horseman. The world sees him for who he truly is and with whom he is truly aligned. What do they do? Like Stalin’s plucked chicken they give him even more power. They started off by giving him a crown on the white horse, a great sword on the red horse, and he somehow attained a pair of balances on the black horse. Here they give him power. It says in fact that they give power to them; he in the person of death and to all the powers of hell. They saw him as an agent of Hell and they gave him even more power. This time they gave him power to kill one fourth of the earth, or rather one fourth of the world’s population. My father maintains that one fourth of the world’s population is almost exactly the population of the America’s. Maybe this is the answer to the reason why the America’s are not mentioned in prophecy. Maybe this is war that is made with other confederate nations that resisted the antichrist. Whatever it was a declaration of war was given to him and full power to conduct it. Listen to the way he conducts this World War: “power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.” The judgments of the Lord follow the same line. “For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast”  (Ezek. 14:21)? And this fits the description of Jesus Christ concerning the beginning of sorrows: “there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” We have a description of the type of warfare this will be the means in which the antichrist wins it. He uses the sword to kill. That takes in all modern weapons of warfare. He uses hunger to kill. He uses his power over the world markets to starve the enemy with famine. He used death. Coupled with Ezekiel we get the idea that this is pestilence. This is disease warfare. He also used the beast of the earth. They were torn with beasts. We can only imagine the fate of those that live in such a world who would dare to resist the beast.
